How did the hybrid puppies, aka Designer Puppies, come to our lives?

Domestication of dogs started 14,000 years ago when our need for a hunter, protector, and more importantly a friend increased as agriculture and cattle-raising increased. Back then, we solely relied on dogs as a loyal worker, nowadays, dogs are, more than a necessity, a desired “need.” Genetically, we have created an animal that is a loyal companion; however, dogs have been incorporated in our families. They play a very important role, so much so that we consider them one more member of our family.

That same fondness for the dogs has led us to customize them into more family- and children-friendly puppies. At the beginning big dogs such German Shepherds, Labrador retrievers, and Saint Bernards were more popular amongst the public; as of today, new doggy combinations have taken over. These combinations, if done with the correct types of dogs, bring personal satisfaction and advantages, not only to the dogs themselves but also to those who own them.

Even though pure bred dogs can be physically attractive, their limited gene pool tends to contribute to genetically inherited conditions. Siblings are interbred and so are fathers with daughters hence little or no variability. Pure breeding of German shepherds, for instance, has led to 89 inherited disorders.

Designer Puppies have a greater gene pool with better traits since two different attractive breeds have come together. The most common pedigree used to breed with another race is the Poodle.

So far, these are some of the Designer Puppies that have been created:

> Aussiedoodle – a mix between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle
> Boxerdoodle – a mix between a Boxer and a Poodle
> Cairnoodle – a mix between a Cairn Terrier and a Poodle
> Cavapoo — a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle
> Chi-Poo – a mix between a Chihuahua and a Poodle
> Cockapoo – a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle
> Doodleman Pinscher – a mix between a Doberman and a Standard Poodle
> Doxipoo – a mix between a Dachshund and a Poodle
> Goldendoodle – a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle
> Jackapoo – Jack Russell Terrier and a Poodle
> Labradoodle – Labrador Retriever and a Poodle
> Malti-Poo – Maltese and a Poodle
> Pekepoo – Pekingese and a Poodle
> Poochin – Japanese Chin and a Poodle
> Pugapoo – Pug and a Poodle
> Saint Berdoodle – Saint Bernard and a Poodle
> Schnoodle – Schnauzer and a Poodle
> Scoodle – Scottish Terrier and a Poodle
> Shepadoodle – German Shepherd and a Standard Poodle
> Shih-Poo – Shih-Tzu and a Poodle
> Yorkie-poo – Yorkie and Poodle

A cross that is definitely NOT recommended is: Pug and Pekingese since their eyes easily pop out of the socket to rest on the cheek and the progeny of these two breeds can easily yield a puppy with detrimental eye problems.
